Weekend getaway to Penang - 23 Love Lane boutique hotel

If you have watched Hong Kong TVB drama Outbound Love 单恋双城, you will know this hotel then. I watched this drama but I didn't know it was 23 Love Lane and I thought it was part of the Lone Pine Hotel.

I browsed through tripadvisor and found this hotel with good reputation. The more I read about this hotel, the more I find it familiar and I realized this is the boutique hotel featured in Outbound Love.

Room

We spent 2 nights in Grand Anglo Indian room which located on 2nd floor. The room is huge. All basic amenities are provided. No fridge in our room but there is one at the 2nd floor lounge which is just outside of our room. It is not quite convenient as we bought ice cream from outside and we wanted to store it in freezer first. Everything in lounge and fridge is free, I had to properly wrap my ice cream to show others that ice cream is not for hotel guests. There is no mini bar in our room but we can always get free soft drinks, coffee, tea and biscuits from the lounge.

Our room is facing Love Lane, we could hear noise from motorbikes roaring passed hotel and music from bar nearby. However it was not that bad and didn't really bother us.

Bathroom. It is nice to have a dressing corner for ladies in bathroom. L'Occitane shower foam, shampoo and conditioner were provided and replaced daily.

Room rate

It is not cheap. It cost me RM1000 for 2 nights in Grand Anglo Indian room. I made my room reservation from booking.com. Though the room rate is not cheap, the service and comfort offered make the room value for money.

Facility

23 Love Lane hotel is transformed from shop house, so don't expect swimming pool, gym, sauna. They have a lounge located at 2nd floor, visitors can have coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuit here.

Wifi is available in area. However, connection is very bad in our room, disconnect easily. We can only enjoy better connection in the sitting area outside our bedroom.

Service

Staying in 23 Love Lane makes you feel like home. Probably because there are only 10 rooms and limited guests, hotel staffs are friendly and attentive. We were warmly welcomed and offered us nutmeg drinks upon arrival. We found some insect eggs and "new born" baby on our bed the next day, we quickly requested to change new bed sheet and the problem was attended immediately.

High tea is offered daily from 4:30pm - 6:30pm. We always go back in the afternoon for a rest, enjoy high tea in their lobby before going out again.

Housekeeping service is done 2 times a day. Every evening, hotel staff will spray insert repellent, clear up dustbin, lit up candle and essential oil in bathroom.

Breakfast

We had breakfast at the restaurant beside hotel. It's like those old style coffee house.

Breakfast selection is limited but it's good enough for me. They serve various fruits such as kiwi, strawberry, plum, pineapple. They offer us 2 kind of breakfast - western or local style (roti canai).

It's delicious but kinda oily.

Overall

It was a good experience staying in 23 Love Lane hotel. If you do not have budget constrains, this will be a great choice. Highly recommended!

Tips

Don't take the Grand Anglo Indian room facing Love Lane. Remember to get a copy of map with street art location. If not, this Penang street art map might be helpful to you.

  1. Hi Iva, enjoyed reading your review on TripAdvisor which brought me to your blog.
I am planning my first trip to Penang in May... and interested to stay at 23 Love Lane.
One of your tips mentioned to not take the Grand Anglo Indian room. How about the rooms located in the Straits Eclectic Building and 1920's Jack Roof Annex? Which room would you have opt for instead?
I'd love to hear your opinions... Please reply. Thanks :)

    1. Hi LadyLeo I was staying in Grand Anglo Indian room back then, it's facing main street Love Lane therefore it's very noisy at night. Straits Electric Building room is facing hotel courtyard, a quiet garden, see 2nd and 4th photo in this post.
